MEXICAN OR NEW MEXICAN CHRISTO https://bluestemantiques.com/product/mexican-or-new-mexican-christo/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mexican-or-new-mexican-christo https://bluestemantiques.com/product/mexican-or-new-mexican-christo/#respond Sat, 17 Jul 2021 18:07:39 +0000 https://bluestemantiques.com/?post_type=product&p=47 Mexican or New Mexican Christo
This articulated Christ figure was made in northern Mexico or southern New Mexico (El Paso?) in the 19th century. It has glass eyes and was made with articulated limbs. It displays the wounds of Christ and retains about 40% of its early paint. The remaining surface has been restored by in-painting with artists' oil colors. No attempt has been made to conceal the restoration. The figure is 55" tall and has a looming presence. I believe that this figure is associated with the Penetentes in northern Mexico and in New Mexico. This figure was found in Santa Fe about 15 years ago. I have owned it since.

17TH – 18TH C CANDLESTICKS https://bluestemantiques.com/product/17th-18th-c-candlesticks/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=17th-18th-c-candlesticks https://bluestemantiques.com/product/17th-18th-c-candlesticks/#respond Fri, 16 Jul 2021 21:01:40 +0000 https://bluestemantiques.com/?post_type=product&p=32 This pair of candlesticks is either 17th century or early 18th century. They are very heavy and finished with strong turning marks. Many candlesticks like these came out of Mexico in the 1970s. This pair has a wonderful repair on one of the turnings and to me this adds to the patina and romance of the objects.
