Description
Mexican or New Mexican Christo
This articulated Christ figure was made in northern Mexico or southern New Mexico (El Paso?) in the 19th century. It has glass eyes and was made with articulated limbs. It displays the wounds of Christ and retains about 40% of its early paint. The remaining surface has been restored by in-painting with artists’ oil colors. No attempt has been made to conceal the restoration. The figure is 55″ tall and has a looming presence. I believe that this figure is associated with the Penetentes in northern Mexico and in New Mexico. This figure was found in Santa Fe about 15 years ago. I have owned it since.
